Before arriving to Lyon, France, my journey included a 24 hour layover in Frankfurt. Rather than waiting idly at the airport, I decided to make the most of my time and explore the city. What followed was a delightful day filled with delicious food, cultural insights, and a stroll through history.
A Taste of Frankfurt
My first stop was a local eatery where I tried Brötchen Bratwurst. This classic German street food—grilled sausage served in a crusty bread roll—was the perfect way to start my adventure. To accompany it, I opted for a local beer called Tegernseer Hell. Crisp and refreshing, it complemented the hearty flavors of the Bratwurst perfectly.

Exploring German History
One of the highlights of my day was visiting the Museum für Moderne Kunst, which featured an eye-opening exhibition on the history of immigration in Germany. The exhibit provided a fascinating look at the diverse influences that have shaped modern Germany, making me reflect on the complex and ever-evolving nature of cultural identity.

A Sweet Stop
No visit to Germany would be complete without indulging in some local sweets. I stopped by a bakery to try Bethmännchen, a traditional Frankfurt specialty made of marzipan and almonds. Beyond its delicious taste, learning about the history of this small treat—dating back to the 19th century—added another layer of appreciation to the experience.
Strolling Through History
As the day came to an end, I took a leisurely walk through Frankfurt’s New Old Town. This beautifully reconstructed part of the city blends historic charm with modern touches, making it a perfect spot to soak in the atmosphere. The cobblestone streets, restored medieval buildings, and lively squares made for a picturesque and relaxing way to wrap up my brief but memorable visit.

Though my time in Frankfurt was short, it left a lasting impression. The city's blend of tradition and modernity, its rich history, and its delicious food made my layover feel like a mini-adventure before my move to Lyon.
